Mike Jones Wins Canada Cup Downhill Mountain Bike Race In Calgary

[August 10, 2004 - Calgary, Alberta] Calgary Olympic Park hosted race number three in the Canada Cup Mountain Bike series this past weekend. The course received praise from all of the athletes, and was comprised of a mix of high-speed sections, rock gardens, tight and technically challenging woods and large jumps. The weather, though threatening, cooperated for the weekend and the racers were treated to a fast and fun course.

The man of the day was Victoria's Mike Jones (Norco Factory Team, SOLE Custom Footbeds, Oakley), who posted the fastest time of 1:45:40, a full second ahead of second place Geoff Pendrel (Devinci) from Fredericton N.B. The men's podium was rounded out by Quebec's Luke Kitzanuk (Giant Bicycles).

In the Women's event, Danika Schroter (Giant Bicycles) dominated the event, and finished the challenging race nearly 3 seconds ahead of Calgary's own Stephanie Nychka. Whistler's Brooke Baker (Norco Factory Team) rounded out the women's podium.

Drew Mitchell (Norco, SOLE Custom Footbeds) won the Junior men's race. Interestingly, Mitchell and Jones are both training partners in Victoria and they attributed their victories to their ability to train together on the course.
